Project’s description: Terracotta Daughters
In this project, the French New York based artist Prune Nourry reflects upon gender preference in China. She immerses herself in the local culture through the familiar symbol of the Xi’an Terracotta Soldiers, collaborating with Chinese craftsmen to make an army of 108 unique life-size Terracotta Daughters. Prune sculpted 8 original sculptures as portraits of 8 countryside girls part of the project (Haoping, Pan, Huiyun, Yindi, Yue, Ruixia, Lizhou and Jianwei) and then combined the molds into 108 unique combinations to create the Army.
Description of the artwork:
Like headshots, these depictions of the 8 originals Terracotta Daughters seem to march off the paper surface. This was the challenge Nourry gave to the Idem fine-art printing studio’s artisans, who worked the ink shades to convey a strong sense on three dimensionality.
